I learned the process of fabric screen printing in this workshop induction; this again highlighted a need to become proficient in Illustrator so I can create my own artwork files (Creative Suite lesson scheduled for next week!).
I’ve always been drawn to screenprinting, the block colours and the method of layering. It’s quite removed from anything I would term as ”my style” but I like its simplicity – although having run through the stages and drying times for making a screen, simple is perhaps not the correct word.
It was great to see what other students were working on, the designs that were being created, the colours and types of fabric that were being used. My highlight from the session was learning about the different types of pastes that can be used to create different textures and effects. Flocking (mentioned in my Workshop 1 post) was still a favourite, as well as devore paste; where the solution dissolves natural fibres to leave any synthetic blend. Puff binder; the paint raises up under heat to create a 3D effect, and bitmapping; where the design from the artwork can create a pixelated effect.
