Art or something more familiar?

Subversion

Our introduction to the ‘A Question of Research’ module was followed by sitting quietly in a dark room and processing… for quite some time. I felt overwhelmed with no idea of where to start. It’s actually taken until now, to organise my thoughts in a way that makes sense to put on paper.

Our question (1 out of 3) to deconstruct as a group of creatives (illustrators, graphic designers, photographers) before regrouping with the wider faculty was :

“In what way can subversion develop creativity in relation to your own practice”

So what is subversion? A plot twist, an act of rebellion, going against the grain, thinking outside the box, to overthrow the mainstream, abandon existing expectations, to not conform.

In the context of creativity, it’s questioning what you already know. It’s challenging what society expects within the parameters of convention and reframing or repositioning from a new, innovative and original perspective.

In a world where there is so much choice, technology, social media; it feels very difficult to present something new that hasn’t already been done or thought of by someone before.

Also, to subvert whatever your creative interest is, surely means to position it in an uncomfortable way? Challenge your own values and assumptions?

This journey started with the intention of getting out of my comfort zone… I am well and truly there.
